VEGAN NEWBIE TIP: IRON
For women, getting enough iron is already a challenge. For a vegan, it’s even tougher & many vegans end up with iron deficiencies. On the advice of your doctor, you may want to take an iron supplement. You can find plant based, vegan friendly iron supplements at health food stores. In addition, eat these foods: Spinach, Green & Lima Beans, Wheat germ, Brewer’s yeast (a supplement), Dried fruit such as raisins & prunes, Blackstrap molasses (use in baking or take as a supplement) Try using a cast iron to cook with as it can add iron to your food. In order to make plant protein more absorbable, pair it with a vitamin C rich food, drink, or supplement. For example, you can have a small glass of orange juice with a meal that contains a lot of iron. *Disclaimer: as always consult a nutritionist or your health care provider.
